Weekly Political Roundup—Moving Energy to the Fore

It may be the doldrums of summer in Washington, D.C., but September and the renewal of energy policy discussions and debates is just around the corner.  Some are already looking ahead to shaping that discussion: on September 23 and 24, the Council on Competitiveness will hold a “National Energy Summit & International Dialogue” in Washington.

The summit-which is being cosponsored by a wide variety of corporations and nonprofit organizations, including Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE)-will bring policymakers, corporate leaders, and experts from around the energy world together to discuss “specific strategies for meeting U.S. energy and sustainability challenges” and “principles on climate change.”  Among the featured participants will be Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx and co-Chairman of the Energy Security Leadership Council, a project of SAFE.

The range of issues competing for national attention-and, as important, the attention of key policymakers in Washington-this fall will be tremendous.  Therefore, any prominent gathering of opinion leaders that helps push crucial energy issues to the front of the policy landscape will be helpful.

“The future economic prosperity of the United States is inextricably tied to our ability to create a sustainable and balanced energy system,” the Council on Competitiveness writes in its literature on the Summit. We could not agree more, and we look forward to hearing what a distinguished panel of participants has to say on these crucial issues next month.
