Political (Not Too Much To) Roundup
It was another uneventful week in Congress, in terms of energy security, as both chambers head toward August recess. With healthcare and climate change both now slated for September or later, members are certain to get an earful while visiting with their constituents about these issues, although many expect the primary outrage to focus on healthcare. Many constituents, however, will be asking why a town controlled by the same party cannot seem to get anything done. It is feasible that many vulnerable members will be coming back to town in September with one thing on their minds: delivering on a major agenda item before they adjourn for this session later this fall. The one issue that could bit that bill is the bipartisan energy bill Chairman Bingaman and Ranking Member Murkowski passed out of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee earlier this summer. Energy security may not be as glamorous right now as healthcare, but it is the one major issue that has made significant progress with bipartisan precedent and momentum. We hope the Congress will take up the legislation when they return in September and prove to their constituents that they can in fact “do something” other than bicker with each other.
